On Guard With Natural Selection

We speak with Adred & Rafael and get an inside look at the NYC based group, Natural Selection, who’s been throwing some of the premier DNB events in the city.

Can you give us a brief history of the night?
Adred & Rafael Salvador met in 2010, and they learned they share an appreciation for the deeper side of Jungle Drum & Bass. Realizing there was a need for a party in NYC that showcases those flavors, they began to flesh out a vision of what this party would be like and the first party came to fruition about a year later.

How long has the night/crew been officially going?
Since June 2011 – almost 4 years!

Who are your current resident DJ’s?
Adred, Rafael Salvador, Raw Q, and Tanktop

In a world engulfed by “EDM” what do you contribute the nights longevity to?
We push a vibe that we believe in, and our belief shows through. We also reinforce the venue’s sound a majority of the time, because this music is designed to be heard and felt through a proper club sound system.

What are your top 5 Favorite memories or milestones?
NS001 with DJ Marky
NS010 with Goldie, St. Patrick’s Day 2012
Ant TC1 & AI, 2013
Metalheadz NYC, 2014
NS030 with Lenzman’s NYC debut

If you could pick any 3 djs past, present, or future for a dream line up who would they be?
Raf – Just 3?! Hmmm…Fabio, Grooverider and Starchild – and there would be another three rooms for hip hop, reggae and house!
Adred – Calibre, Marcus Intalex & dBridge with DRS hosting

Do you have any advice for new promoters?
Develop a solid strategy and budget and stick to them, invest in print and digital promotion, keep the big picture in mind, reinforce the venue’s sound if needed, provide hospitality to out-of-town talent, and promote promote promote!
