We speak with Steve Foulis of the Portsmouth (UK) company FLAK who is offering the full DNB experience to its party goers and is swiftly becoming the spot in the southern portion of England.
Can you give us a brief history of the company?
FLAK is ‘the’ new promotion company. We pride ourselves on quality and constantly pushing in new directions, covering gaps within the music industry. Our aim is to bring the highest quality music to the masses with artists, event management and promotional enterprising all being critical components. We bring a fresh and exciting experience to a large audience across many genres. We promote for DJ’s, Producers, Live Performing Artists and FM/Online Radio stations alike.
How long has the company been officially going?
We have been running roughly about a year now. since July 2014
Who are your current resident DJ’s?
Catch, Funky Green, Mellor-D, all amazing vinyl DJ’s no skool like the Old Skool
In a world engulfed by “EDM” what do you contribute the nights longevity to?
Personally we are very big on visuals, be it lighting, production or decor, stepping into a world that is not the norm, taking you awake on a night of adventure. But you can never forget about the sound, with a warm bass tearing it up!
What are your Top 5 Favorite memories or milestones?
Meeting with legendary artists like jumping jack frost and seeing them smash it out!
Getting our first contract signed for artist management
Picking up our radio show and going in large every week.
Seeing one of the up and coming producers we support hitting it off with Indivision
Generally just having a blast with everyone we get to meet doing this.
If you could pick any 3 DNB/Jungle DJ’s past, present, or future for a dream line up who would they be?
Dj Rap: the lass rolls out the bass as well as any of her male counterparts, she adds a certain style that keeps the girls moving and the guys bubbling on the dancefloor always wanting more.
Nicky Blackmarket: the guys always been on it from day one, the best all round selection and great technical ability. No jungle party is complete without this guy in the line up!
Kenny Ken: Let’s face it, the guy is so deeply embedded into the scene it would have been completely different without his influence! Even from the early days it’s clear just how much this guy was going to be involved within the inner workings of both production and parties alike. All passion, all style and a bag of bootlegs to boot!
Do you have any advice for new promoters?
Always get your ideas down on paper, and build a solid strategy of where you aim to be, don’t listen to the nay sayers, if you want something go for it, the only person stopping you is you!
